The smallest workable hull width is actually one BC base, i.e. 8’.
Hence the smallest Baldakin Explorer Catamaran, holding one standard ISO 40’ container module (BM) in each hull, would be about 80’ (24m) long.
Based on the adopted overall length to beam ratio of about 2, its beam would be approx 40’ (12m).
The total number of persons housed on board in “Basic Twin” BCs would be 20 to 40, depending on the occupancy (of 2 to 4 persons per BC)
This would include the crew, numbering 4 or 6, based on the “industry-standard” ratio of 1 crew for 3 “guests”, which, like the passenger “payload” of 16 or 14, respectively, would be housed in 8' twin BCs.
The covered “shared areas” in such a cruiser would be one sole deck in-between the hulls, i.e. 20’ x 40’ (or 6m x 12m), i.e. 72sqm, plus the free space in the front part of each hull, i.e. a total of 10sqm usable for additional “private” storage of approx 1.0cbm for each guest BC.
Based on the outdoor deck space (including the front “trampoline”) of about 40’x 70’ (12m x 21m), i.e. approx 250sqm, the total shared area per guest would be around 330sqm, i.e. around 20sqm per guest (or 40sqm per “twin” cabin/BC), which is much more than the average common areas of 5sqm found on a traditional, even motor driven, cruise ship!
It is to be noted that, in these smaller catamarans, with only one level/deck of BCs, all these have not only the window directly on the sea but also unobstructed daylight bathing their front part.

Note: All the “Baldakin Explorers” can also be constructed as a power catamaran (with or without a flying bridge). In such a case the spars, rigging and swing keels can be made without and a more classic and powerful motorization installed.

Particular features (in addition to the standard design features of the Explorers)
- Large multipurpose room
This room, of approx 45 sqm at floor level but 70 sqm at elbow/eye level, where it counts (Thanks to the “Baldakin” concept), is the “compensation” for the relative exiguity of the ”Baldakin” cabins.
This room, the central point of the vessel, can be used as a room for dining, living, fitness, dancing, home cinema, table tennis, games and other sport, cultural, entertainment and social activities and performances, as shown on the attached sketch, thanks to tables (which can be stowed away on sliding rails) and stackable chairs.
- “Technical module”
All the ship’s machinery is housed in another 40’ ISO container frame linking the two “baldakin” modules, and therefore ensuring a stiff connection between the two hulls.
This module will include the two Diesel generators, the hydraulic power system, the air compressor (for diving bottles), the water makers, the Central A/C, the kitchen cookers, oven and washing machines, an ice-maker, the machinery for the Jacuzzi situated on top and all the other machinery and instrumentation required to operate the ship.
The technical module will also house the “Skipper’s office”, which will include the navigation instruments, the computer server and network and the central electrical control panel.
It represents also an extension of the Skipper’s baldakin cabin, to which it connects through a private passage, thereby constituting a suite of approx 20 sqm.
- Motorization
The “Baldakin 80’ Explorer” can be powered in a classic manner, by 2 diesel engines embedded in the hulls, each powering a propeller. An alternative would be to install axially a single propeller powered by an electric or a hydraulic motor (embedded in the floor of the multipurpose room) through a shaft, which can be activated by a hydraulic ram to move the propeller in and out of the water.
The Diesel Electric Whisper propulsion system developed by Panda-Fisherâ seems particularly attractive, specially that the diesel generators could be used to power the electrical motor fitted to the propeller while at the same time providing for the on-board power supply.
